Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL) has expanded its market portfolio by securing a distribution deal with a Namibian distillery for Windhoek beer in Kenya.

KWAL is a leading manufacturer in the Kenyan alcohol industry, with a portfolio of prestigious local and international brands, including County, Kibao, Hunter’s Choice, Savanna Cider, Kingfisher, and Amarula.

This marks Windhoek Beer’s second entry into the Kenyan market. The brand previously partnered with East African Breweries Limited (EABL) but later terminated the agreement.

Heineken Connection

KWAL is owned by South African firm Distell Group, which holds approximately 55% of its stake. Distell Group was acquired by Dutch brewer Heineken in 2023.

Heineken also owns the Windhoek beer brand through Heineken Beverages Holdings, a special-purpose vehicle created after the acquisition of Namibia Breweries and Distell Group.

Focus on Premiumization

The launch of Windhoek Beer comes as Kenyan consumers increasingly seek premium and craft beers. Recent industry reports indicate a surge in demand for high-quality brews.

“Kenya’s beer lovers are becoming more discerning, and Windhoek’s commitment to purity and quality aligns perfectly with this growing demand,” says Lina Githuka, Managing Director of KWAL. “Windhoek beer is a perfect addition, reinforcing our leadership in the market and providing Kenyan consumers with even more high-quality choices.”

“100% Real” Campaign

KWAL will launch Windhoek Beer through the “100% Real” campaign, emphasising its purity and adherence to the German Beer Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) of 1516.

“There’s a noticeable shift in consumer preferences in Kenya, with a growing appreciation for authentic, high-quality beers,” adds Jonas Geeraerts, Commercial Director at KWAL.

Windhoek Beer is crafted with only three natural ingredients: malted barley, hops, and water.
