Morine Mahadi isn’t just a bartender; she’s an artist crafting memorable experiences with every drink. Her passion, dedication, and commitment to connection make her a true asset to the industry.

Her journey began in the world of hospitality, but it wasn’t until she landed an internship in a hotel bar that she discovered her true calling.

From the front office to the kitchen, nothing resonated with her quite like the energy and connection behind the bar. Tantalized by the rows of colourful bottles and the rhythmic dance of the bartenders, Maureen knew this was where she belonged.

“The bartenders with their tattoos, always seemed so cool,” she recalls. Morine’s curiosity and personality were a perfect fit.

“They told me I had the personality and look for bartending, and that’s how I discovered Nairobi Bar School.”

Learning and Growing: A Bartender’s Journey

Morine’s thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. After her first bartending role at the Rema Hotel in 2019, she became a certified barista and mixologist. Every day is a learning experience for Morine.

“COVID happened, and that was tough,” Morine reflects. “But even then, the bar has always been my happy place.”

“Platforms like Diageo Bar Academy and social media are great resources,” she says. “I also love visiting other bars in Nairobi, picking up tips and tricks from their bartenders.”

The Art of Connection, More Than Just Drinks

For Morine, bartending is about human connection; more than pouring drinks. “I get to know my guests on a personal level,” she explains.

Her vibrant personality shines through as she chats with them, learning their names, their stories, and their drink preferences. It’s about becoming a confidante, a temporary friend who listens without judgment.

“It’s not just about the drinks; it’s about setting the mood and creating an enjoyable experience.”

Her friendly and engaging personality makes her guests feel welcome.

“Every day, I tell myself it’s my bar,” Morine explains. “It’s up to me to make sure the clients enjoy the whole experience, not just the drinks. I never let a guest leave disappointed,” she says.

Building Confidence and Recognition

Maureen’s dedication extends to competitions. Reaching the World Class semi-finals in 2023 boosted her confidence and put her name on the map within the industry.

“It’s not just about winning,” she says. “It’s about meeting like-minded people and learning from them.”

Advice for Aspiring Mixologists

For aspiring bartenders, Morine’s message is clear: passion is key.

“If you’re doing it for the money, you won’t go far,” she warns.

“Grow your craft, share information, and inspire others. Be confident in who you are and go out there and meet other like-minded people in the industry.”

Beyond the Bar

While Morine excels behind the bar, she has a life beyond work.

“Life is beautiful and I have time,” she captions her photos from the GTC centre overlooking Nairobi, Kenya’s capital on her Instagram feed.

Travelling is a big part of her life. Travel is her way to unwind and recharge, seeking new experiences and cultures to broaden her horizons.

She is also a strong advocate for responsible drinking. She educates friends and patrons alike about hydration and pacing themselves. “Drinking is not a competition,” she reminds us.

Shift in Bar Culture?

Morine acknowledges a potential decline in high-end bar visits. However, she focuses on the positive aspects of her profession.

Morine challenges the perception of overpriced cocktails mixed with cheap liquor. “As a bartender,” she says, “It’s my responsibility to educate clients. A good experience isn’t about mixing everything under the sun. It’s about quality ingredients and understanding how to truly enjoy a drink.”

“You have to maintain the standards, always maintain your standards never never go lower. If I give you this experience, and you give me a nine out of 10, the next time you come, I want the experience to be 12 out of 10.

I don’t want to give you a nine, I already gave you a nine. Personally, every day I aspire to do better, better experience to do better. That’s how you maintain your clients.”

Maureen’s Signature Touch

When asked about her favourite drink to recommend, Morine playfully keeps her signature creations a surprise.

“It’s not about the drink itself,” she explains.

“It’s about the experience. If you tell me to surprise you, I’ll create an amazing signature cocktail based on your preferences. It’s all about creating something special for you.”

“I can assure you it won’t be on any other bar’s menu,” she teases.
