Small and medium enterprises across Kenya can now transfer funds directly from Airtel Money wallets into Absa Bank Kenya accounts and pay to Absa merchant paybill numbers, following a partnership the two companies signed this week. The integration targets a gap that has long slowed down everyday business transactions, the friction between mobile money and formal banking.
The service covers business payments, bill settlements, and fund transfers, all accessible from a mobile phone. Airtel Money customers also receive up to 100 percent cashback as airtime on all paybill payments made through the service.
Why This Partnership Addresses a Real Problem
Mobile money remains the most accessible financial tool in rural and underserved parts of Kenya, yet moving funds between mobile wallets and bank accounts has historically required extra steps, extra time, and in many cases, extra cost. This integration removes those barriers.
Airtel Money Managing Director Anne Kinuthia-Otieno framed the partnership around that reality. “As customers increasingly demand payment solutions that are simple, fast, and reliable, this partnership addresses the long-standing friction points in digital payments, supporting the growth of small businesses and making digital payments work better for everyday life,” she said.
What This Means for Business Owners
For SMEs, the change is practical. Business owners no longer need to move money through intermediary steps before it reaches their bank account. Payments arrive faster, records stay cleaner, and cash flow becomes easier to manage.
Absa Bank Kenya Business Banking Director Renato D’Souza pointed to the broader shift the bank sees among its business customers. “Today’s SMEs are not just looking for banking services. They are looking for ecosystems that help them move faster, stay agile, and compete in an increasingly digital marketplace.”
D’Souza added that the integration gives entrepreneurs greater control over their finances. “By enabling transfers from Airtel Money wallets into Absa accounts and simplifying payments to Absa merchant paybill numbers, we are giving entrepreneurs more control, more choice, and more efficiency in how they manage their cash flows.”
How to Use the Service
Customers access the service through two routes. The first is the Airtel Money USSD menu by dialling *334#. The second is the My Airtel App, where users select Airtel Paybill under the Airtel Money menu, enter Absa’s paybill number 303030, then follow with the Absa Bank account number or merchant short code.
The service works for both personal and business transactions, making it accessible to individual customers and enterprise users alike.
