Njerae built the release around contrast on purpose. “On My Own” grounds itself in accountability and the courage to leave a relationship that no longer serves you. “Let Them Know” catches her off guard instead, tracking the vulnerability that follows when a confident woman falls for someone and stops hiding it.
“I liked the contrast,” Njerae said. “On My Own is about choosing yourself and finding peace in your own company, while Let Them Know is much more vulnerable. You can be healing and still have moments of vulnerability, and I wanted the music to make space for both.”
Producer Vic West shaped “On My Own,” while Jaz Beats built the world around “Let Them Know.” Njerae credits both producers with letting her lyrics lead rather than compete with the arrangement. “They both understood that the emotion needed to lead, and they built worlds around the lyrics instead of competing with them,” she said. “That’s what made each record feel true to itself.”
A reunion with KayCyy
“On My Own” reunites Njerae with KayCyy, the Kenyan born, US based artist she first worked with on 2025’s “Far Away.” Their chemistry has matured since then, according to Njerae. “Far Away was our introduction to each other creatively,” she said. “This time, everything felt a lot more natural. KayCyy has a way of bringing a different perspective melodically and emotionally, and I think we’ve both grown as artists since our first collaboration.”
The track plays out as a direct conversation about love, mistakes, privacy and respect, landing on the point where choosing yourself stops being optional and starts being necessary.
The numbers behind the moment
Njerae arrives at this release riding real momentum. Her breakout single “Aki Sioni” topped Spotify’s year end rankings as Kenya’s most streamed song of 2025, beating out both local and international competition. The track has now passed nine million streams on the platform, and Njerae draws close to 200,000 monthly listeners.
That momentum fits into a wider pattern Khusoko has tracked in Kenya’s entertainment industry, where mobile first streaming and social media are reshaping how local artists reach fans, both at home and abroad.
In July, she picked up a nomination in the Best Female East Africa category at the African Muzik Magazine Awards, known as AFRIMMA, a further sign that her reach now extends well past Kenya.
KayCyy’s own big year
KayCyy brings his own momentum to the collaboration. In June, he signed with A$AP Rocky’s AWGE creative collective and later joined select dates on the North American leg of Rocky’s Don’t Be Dumb tour. His catalogue already includes vocal and songwriting credits on Kanye West’s Donda, among them the Grammy winning track “Hurricane,” along with work alongside major names across hip hop and alternative music. He is also credited as a songwriter on Future and Tyla’s “Game Time,” part of the official FIFA World Cup 2026 album.
That range of credits makes him a natural fit for Njerae’s sound, one that keeps stretching toward a more global audience without losing what made her voice distinct in the first place.
