Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has appointed Eng. Ronoh Kibet Charles, OGW, as Managing Director and CEO designate. He takes office on 1 February 2027, succeeding Eng. Peter Waweru Njenga, who retires.
The board announced the decision on 24 October 2026 after what it described as a competitive recruitment process. A transition period will cover the handover and keep the company’s strategic priorities on course.
Kibet runs commercial services at KenGen
Kibet is the General Manager for Commercial Services. His office covers energy markets, investments, new business and partnerships, marketing and corporate communication, and sustainability. He brings more than 17 years of experience in geothermal development, project delivery and commercial strategy.
His work combines engineering and commercial leadership. It includes renewable energy development, the expansion of KenGen’s international consultancy services and the Olkaria Green Energy Park.
Kibet describes his mandate in his own words
Kibet sets out his role on his LinkedIn profile. “I am General Manager, Commercial Services leading commercial revenue growth, diversification and strategic partnerships,” he writes. “I drive the G2G 2034 Strategy by translating ambition into bankable investments and new revenue streams.”
He lists the Olkaria Green Energy Park among his projects. “I have spearheaded landmark ventures including the Olkaria Green Energy Park, engaging global anchor investors in green data centres, fertilizer and energy intensive industries,” he writes. He adds that he champions the export of KenGen’s geothermal expertise and technical services, “advancing our ambition to become a global renewable energy solutions leader.”
Njenga leaves after a profit of KSh 10.48 billion in FY2025
Njenga led the company as Managing Director and CEO. KenGen reported a profit after tax of KSh 10.48 billion for the 2025 financial year under his tenure. The company also grew its geothermal consultancy portfolio, which includes assignments in Eswatini.
The board, management and staff thanked Njenga for his leadership and wished him well in retirement. The leadership change comes as KenGen builds new business lines alongside electricity generation.
The board names growth and people as priorities
The board congratulated Kibet and said it has confidence in his ability to build on the company’s results. It expects him to develop staff, strengthen performance and lead KenGen into its next phase of growth, innovation and value creation.
Kibet holds engineering and project management degrees
Kibet holds a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunication and Information Engineering and a Master of Science in Project Management. Both come from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is a certified Project Management Professional and an SAP Project System Consultant.
He completed the Organisational Leadership programme at Harvard Business School. He has also taken executive education at IESE Business School in Spain, the University of Cape Town and Strathmore Business School. He belongs to the Engineers Board of Kenya, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and the Geothermal Association of Kenya. He holds the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya.
KenGen says it is the largest electricity generator in Eastern Africa, with more than 60% of installed capacity in Kenya. Its installed capacity stands at 1,786 MW.
| Source | Capacity (MW) |
|---|---|
| Hydro | 826 |
| Geothermal | 754 |
| Wind | 25.5 |
| Total installed | 1,786 |
Thermal plants supply the balance. KenGen says renewables provide over 90% of its capacity.
Kibet’s start date falls in February 2027. Until then, Njenga remains in office and the two leaders manage the handover.
