Everstrong Capital, a US-based infrastructure investment firm operating in Kenya, has confirmed that construction of the 440-km Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway will begin in Q1 2026.

The announcement was made by Senior Advisor Kyle McCarter on April 25, following a meeting with former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, where they discussed the critical need for enhanced African infrastructure.

McCarter revealed that Everstrong Capital will submit a feasibility study to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for approval in May 2025, aiming for financial closure by year-end.

The project, named Usahihi (Swahili for “Done Correctly”), is estimated to cost Ksh466 billion, with Ksh129 billion already secured through a deal with CPF Capital & Advisory Limited.

The Usahihi Expressway will reduce the Nairobi-Mombasa journey from 10.5 hours to approximately 4.5 hours, enhancing safety and efficiency.

The 4-6 lane dual carriageway will feature rest stops, wildlife observation points, EV charging stations powered by renewable energy, and overpasses designed to support animal migration.

Kenyan Pension Funds to Fund Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway

Initially announced during President William Ruto’s 2024 US visit, the project gained momentum after a Project Development Agreement was signed with KeNHA.

It had stalled in 2019 due to Kenya’s debt ceiling, prompting a shift to a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
