Safaricom PLC and Opportunity International have partnered to develop FarmerAI, an innovative AI chatbot to provide smallholder farmers in Kenya with real-time, relevant agricultural best practices.

The agricultural sector contributes significantly to Kenya’s GDP (22.4% according to KNBS), and smallholder farmers represent a substantial portion of the farming population.

FarmerAI aims to address information gaps faced by these farmers, such as access to timely weather advisories, optimal planting schedules, and effective pest management strategies.

AI-Powered Solutions

FarmerAI leverages generative AI and localized agricultural insights to provide farmers with crucial information directly through accessible channels like SMS and WhatsApp.

This direct-to-farmer approach, facilitated by Safaricom’s DigiFarm platform, eliminates the need for intermediary field agents.

“AI is already transforming the world around us, but the impact this technology can have on underserved communities is truly impactful. Above all, this partnership underscores Opportunity International and DigiFarm’s shared mission to uplift smallholder farmers,” stated Greg Nelson, Chief Technology Officer at Opportunity International.

“Our partnership and this new tool will make agricultural information more accessible, actionable, and equitable for everyone.”

“AI is a critical part of the present and the future. Our mission at Safaricom is to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030. In line with this, we are committed to bringing to our customers and stakeholders technological solutions that will positively impact them,” emphasised Dr Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom.

“FarmerAI is the first solution we are bringing to farmers that enables them to interact with AI and feel the power of that technology. One of the challenges that farmers face today is access to the right information at the right time such as what to plant, when to plant, and weather advisories, among others. This AI chatbot will allow smallholder farmers access verifiable information on common questions to guide their decisions.”

FarmerAI prioritizes human-centered design, with ongoing engagement with farmers through both digital and in-person interactions to ensure the chatbot effectively addresses their real-world challenges.

By leveraging technology to overcome connectivity and cost barriers in rural areas, this partnership aims to enhance food security, increase farmer incomes, and foster long-term economic resilience within Kenyan farming communities.
