African digital music platform Mdundo and Safaricom have partnered to launch a subscription service that allows Kenyans to access DJ mixes for Ksh 5 per day.
The service aims to increase the earnings of artists and improve the user experience.
Only Safaricom customers can use the service. They need to register, and then they can download unlimited music and enjoy fresh DJ mixes every day.
The partnership supports artists in their quest for sustainable music careers by providing a steady income. This enables them to focus on creating more music and developing their skills.
“By introducing our subscription plan with Safaricom, we are reaffirming our commitment to enriching lives through music. We are offering great benefits for music and DJ Mixes fans. Our collaboration with Safaricom also reflects our shared vision of making music a vital part of everyday life,” says Martin Neilsen, CEO of Mdundo.
Mdundo’s monthly active users grew from 21.5 million in September 2022 to 29.2 million in September 2023, a 36% increase.
It paid out Ksh 200 million in royalties last financial year, has a customer base of 30 million monthly active users across 5 key markets, and a catalogue of over 150,000 artists, with 58,000 from Kenya.
Mdundo’s goal is to provide a service and content that are relevant to the 613 million mobile subscribers in Africa expected by 2025.
A Ksh 5 daily subscription, an annual spend of Ksh 1,825, is fairly priced compared to other audio services such as Spotify, which comes in at Ksh 299 per month or Ksh 3,588 per annum, or YouTube Music, which costs Ksh 419.00 per month or Ksh 5,028 annually.
