British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya Plc, has announced several changes to its board of directors and company secretary.

Phyllis Wakiaga and Paul Muthaura have been appointed as independent, non-executive directors.

Wakiaga, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, has over 18 years of experience, including nine years as the CEO and Secretary to the Board at the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM). She also holds non-executive director positions at several organizations.

Muthaura, also an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, is currently the CEO of the Africa Carbon Markets Initiative. He has previously held CEO positions at ICEA Lion General Insurance Company Limited and the Capital Markets Authority (CMA). He serves on several boards and is a member of various organizations.

“The Chairperson and the Board congratulate Phyllis and Paul on their appointment and welcome them to the Board,” the statement issued by BAT Kenya Board chairperson, Rita Kavashe, stated.

Waeni Ngea has been appointed as company secretary. Ngea rejoined BAT Kenya in July 2023 as Head of Legal & Compliance for East & Southern Africa after a three-year tenure at Bamburi Cement plc.

The company also announced the resignation of Kathryne Maundu as company secretary, effective October 23, 2023. Maundu had held the position since June 2020.

“Kathryne has been Company Secretary since June 2020, and during her tenure has demonstrated exceptional professionalism, dedication, and expertise in supporting the Board to disseminate its governance role. We extend our gratitude to Kathryne and wish her continued success and fulfilment as she embarks on a new chapter in her career,” Ms Kavashe said in the statement.

Kathryne Maundu, a seasoned lawyer, has also stepped down from her role as company secretary in Safaricom, East African Breweries Plc, and Eaagads Limited.

According to Business Daily, Maundu cited a change in career focus.
