Isuzu East Africa Limited has terminated its dealership agreement with Associated Motors Limited, closing a commercial relationship that spanned nearly five decades and defined how a generation of Kenyan and regional fleet buyers purchased and serviced their vehicles.
The split, confirmed in a public notice issued by Isuzu East Africa, takes effect immediately. Customers previously served by Associated Motors will transfer to Isuzu’s existing dealer network.
A Partnership Built Over Five Decades
Associated Motors Limited was incorporated in 1964, making it one of Kenya’s longest-established automotive businesses. For close to sixty years, it operated as an authorised Isuzu new vehicle sales dealer and a provider of maintenance and repair solutions.
The company maintained a direct relationship with Isuzu Motors Limited in Japan, not just with the regional subsidiary. That connection placed it at the top tier of the Isuzu East Africa dealer network for most of its operational history.
Isuzu East Africa’ acknowledged “nearly five decades” of shared history and described Associated Motors’ contribution to the network as “long-standing” .
Why the Relationship Ended
Isuzu East Africa’s public notice offers no explanation for the termination. The language is careful, an appreciative in tone, but unambiguous in substance.
“Associated Motors Limited has ceased being an Isuzu East Africa dealer.”
No reason is given. No transition timeline is outlined beyond the assurance that affected customers will be absorbed by the current dealer network.
That absence of explanation is notable given the length of the relationship. Dealership terminations of this duration typically involve one of three causes: strategic network restructuring, commercial disputes, or a mutual decision to part ways. Isuzu East Africa has not indicated which applies here.
What Happens to Associated Motors Now
Associated Motors brings sixty years of automotive experience, established customer relationships, regional operational infrastructure, and technical expertise to whatever comes next. A business of this scale and history does not simply close because one franchise agreement ends. Whether it pursues a new franchise arrangement, pivots to independent vehicle servicing and parts supply, or explores other commercial options remains to be seen.
Isuzu East Africa’s Network Going Forward
For Isuzu East Africa, priority is ensuring that Associated Motors’ former customers experience no disruption in service or parts access. The company’s existing dealer network now absorbs that customer base.
