Airtel Kenya has named Bonke Michael Acting Managing Director of Airtel Money Kenya, placing him at the helm of one of the country’s largest mobile money platforms. He takes over from Anne Kinuthia, who has stepped down from the position.
A Homegrown Leader Steps Up
Michael’s appointment caps more than a decade at Airtel, where he rose through sales, business development and marketing roles before reaching the top of the Money business. That trajectory gives him a rare, ground level view of how Airtel Money actually works, from agent networks in rural towns to boardroom partnerships with banks and fintechs.
In a statement announcing the move, Michael reflected on what the appointment means to him.
“I’m honoured to step into the role of Acting Managing Director Airtel Money Kenya. I’m grateful for the trust and the opportunity to serve in this capacity. As we navigate this transition, I look forward to working alongside an exceptional team to build on our momentum, deliver on our strategic priorities and continue creating meaningful value for our customers, partners and stakeholders. My sincere appreciation to our Management team and colleagues for their confidence and support. Excited for the journey ahead.”
Fifteen Years Building Digital Finance
Michael brings more than 15 years in telecom and fintech to the role. His focus throughout that time has centered on customer lifecycle growth, digital adoption and revenue acceleration, areas he says he approaches through data driven strategy rather than guesswork.
He has spent recent years shaping growth strategy for Airtel Money, forging partnerships with banks, fintechs, merchants, regulators and payment networks, and pushing products designed to widen financial inclusion. His background also covers customer engagement, retention, indirect sales leadership and enterprise transformation, much of it earned in markets where competition and regulation both run high.
A Track Record of Growth
Michael points to a body of work that includes revenue growth exceeding 100 percent, sharper customer engagement, reduced churn and a string of product launches that strengthened Airtel Money’s position in the market. He credits much of this to a combination of analytics, technology and close collaboration across teams.
Looking ahead, Michael says he wants to keep pushing digital innovation and customer insight to the center of how Airtel Money operates, with the aim of building a business ready for where financial services are headed next.
His appointment signals continuity for Airtel Money at a moment when competition among Kenya’s mobile financial platforms continues to intensify, and it places a long serving insider in charge of steering the business through its next phase of growth.
