The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has suspended all gambling advertisements for 30 days, effective April 29, 2025.

“Pursuant to its statutory mandate under the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act (Chapter 131, Laws of Kenya), the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) hereby ORDERS the immediate suspension of all gambling advertisements and testimonials across all media platforms for a period of thirty (30) days with effect from the date of this statement,” the statement read.

During the suspension, operators must submit all advertisements to the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for approval under the Film and Stage Plays Act and ensure compliance with all legislative and regulatory frameworks governing gambling and advertising in Kenya.

Operators are required to implement measures to promote responsible gambling as mandated by BCLB.

The decision follows government concerns over the increasing proliferation of gambling, which some promoters misrepresent as a legitimate investment or shortcut to wealth, leading to adverse socioeconomic consequences.

“The Government has noted, with grave concern, the proliferation of gambling activities across the country. Some gambling promoters are increasingly mischaracterizing gambling as a legitimate investment opportunity and a shortcut to wealth creation. The erroneous depiction occasions adverse socioeconomic consequences, with devastating effects on individuals, families, and the broader community,” Dr. Jane Mwikali Makau Chairperson, The Betting Control and Licensing Board says.

Of particular concern is the airing of gambling ads during the watershed period (5:00 AM to 10:00 PM), exposing vulnerable groups, especially minors, to gambling-related addiction risks.

This includes betting, gaming, lotteries, prize competitions, and related promotions.

To address these issues, the government has formed a multi-agency team to develop interventions, policy recommendations, and enforcement mechanisms for responsible gambling.

The team includes representatives from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Office of the Attorney General, Communications Authority of Kenya, Kenya Revenue Authority, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Kenya Film Classification Board, Media Council of Kenya, Financial Reporting Centre, and BCLB.
