HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, has launched the Better Phone Project to address growing parental concerns about the negative impact of smartphones on children’s mental health.

The Better Phone Project initiative aims to co-create a new phone specifically designed for children, prioritizing their well-being and providing parents with greater control.

A recent global survey commissioned by HMD Global revealed that over half of parents regret giving their child a smartphone, citing negative effects on their child’s behaviour and mental health.

Key findings include:

  • 70% believe their children would be more engaged with family without a smartphone.
  • Nearly 75% fear their children’s exposure to online dangers through smartphones.
  • Almost half believe smartphone use has negatively impacted their child’s personality.

HMD Global is developing a phone that offers a safer and healthier alternative to traditional smartphones. The company is committed to collaborating with parents to ensure the new device meets their specific needs.

Building on its experience in the digital detox space, HMD Global is reimagining the feature phone for modern children.

Potential features include:

  • Limited or no social media access
  • Controlled screen time
  • Enhanced privacy and safety features
  • Durable and long-lasting design

Lars Silberbauer, CMO of HMD Global, stated, “The Better Phone Project is about finding solutions to digital overload while offering choice and balance. We aim to collaborate with parents and experts to create a product that meets their needs.”

HMD Global seeks input from parents, experts, and support groups through webinars and forums. Parents and experts interested in participating can learn more at The Better Phone Project.

By working together, HMD Global believes they can create a phone that empowers children to use technology safely and responsibly, providing peace of mind for parents.
