The University of Nairobi (UoN) and data annotation and model validation solutions provider Sama have joined forces to advance the field of Generative AI (GenAI) in Kenya.

Through this partnership, UoN students and faculty will gain valuable hands-on experience in the fast-paced world of GenAI. Sama will offer part-time employment opportunities, providing necessary training, equipment, and dedicated workspaces.

Partnership Benefits Both Parties

“This partnership is a significant step forward,” said Prof. Stephen Kiama, UoN’s Vice-Chancellor, during the signing ceremony. “It offers students a unique platform to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, enhancing their learning and preparing them for the AI industry.”

This collaboration coincides with UoN’s plans to establish an Artificial Intelligence School, further strengthening Kenya’s AI workforce.

Annepeace Alwala, Sama’s Vice President of Global Service Delivery, expressed her enthusiasm:

“We are thrilled to partner with UoN to nurture the next generation of Kenyan AI talent. This partnership demonstrates our commitment to fostering innovation and creating opportunities for young people to excel in the rapidly growing field of AI. By providing practical experience, we are investing in the future of AI and contributing to Kenya’s technological growth.”

Sama emphasized its commitment to Kenya’s national economic development agenda outlined in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BeTA).

They believe this initiative bridges the digital divide, empowers communities, fosters talent, and positions Kenya strategically within the global AI landscape.
