22 exceptional students from the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) graduating class have been awarded a combined $7.5 million (KES 980 million) in scholarships to prestigious universities in the US and Canada by the Kenya Scholar Access Program (KenSAP).
These scholars were chosen from all 47 Kenyan counties from underprivileged backgrounds but possess outstanding academic achievements.
They ranked among the top 0.1% of KCSE test-takers, demonstrating exceptional intellectual potential.
However, KenSAP’s selection process goes beyond grades. It considers family background, extracurricular activities, commitment to community development, and leadership potential, ensuring a well-rounded group.
Preparation and Ongoing Support
Prior to university enrollment, the chosen students participate in KenSAP’s intensive, tuition-free, six-month residential program. This program equips them with the skills needed to excel in North American academia.
Students prepare for standardized tests, attend American-style seminars, learn about American culture and universities, and receive comprehensive guidance through the complex application process.
Full Scholarships and Continued Support
The scholarships awarded by the universities cover a broad range of expenses, including tuition, housing, meals, travel, and other associated costs. Even after university enrollment, KenSAP remains a pillar of support.
The program offers pre-university internships in Kenya, college readiness programs, and ongoing academic and career counselling. Alumni mentorship programs further empower students for long-term success.

The program, initially funded primarily by Charles Field-Marsham, has transitioned to a diversified funding model.
Now, alumni fundraising contributes nearly 20% of the annual budget, exceeding $350,000 in recent years. Additionally, partnerships with Kenyan corporations are fostering ongoing financial support.
