Uganda emerged victorious in the 2023 CECAFA U-18 Boys Championship final, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kenya in extra time.

The closely contested match saw both teams display remarkable skill and determination, with Uganda’s resilience shining through in extra time. This victory marks a significant achievement for Uganda, solidifying its prowess in youth football within the Eastern and Central regions.

Following intense competition between Uganda and Kenya, the regular time concluded with a 1-1 draw.

The turning point came in the 78th minute when Uganda managed to level the score, setting the stage for an exhilarating conclusion to the CECAFA U-18 tournament.

With the momentum in their favour, Uganda seized the opportunity in extra time, netting the decisive goal that ultimately secured their status as the CECAFA U-18 Boys Champions of East and Central Africa.

The team’s determination and skill were on full display throughout the championship, culminating in a triumph in the final against the Kenyan opponent.

Uganda had to face Kenya in the finals after a thrilling 2023 CECAFA U-18 Boys Championship semi-final showdown, where Kenya secured their spot in the finals after a penalty shootout against Tanzania.

The heroics of goalkeeper Ibrahim Wanzala, who saved two crucial penalties, propelled the Junior Stars to a 4-3 victory, securing them a spot in the CECAFA U-18 finals.

The closely contested semi-final match ended 0-0 in both normal and extra time, setting the stage for a penalty shootout at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu.

Wanzala’s crucial saves became the defining moments as Kenya clinched the shootout 4-3, with Syphas Otieno sealing the victory with the final penalties held at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu.

Earlier in the tournament, Kenya’s Junior Stars had demonstrated their prowess, securing a place in the semi-finals by defeating Rwanda 1-0 in the Group A encounters.

Aldrine Kibet’s solitary goal in the 36th minute proved decisive in that group-stage encounter.

Uganda, their opponents, had advanced to the final after a 1-0 triumph over Rwanda in the other semi-final. Abubaker Mayanja’s second-half strike placed Uganda in the championship showdown.

For Kenya, the journey to the finals has been marked by notable performances, with players like Ibrahim Wanzala and goal-scorer Aldrine Kibet playing pivotal roles.

Kenya was ranked second, with Tanzania in 3rd place, securing bronze at the 2023 CECAFA U18 Championships after beating Rwanda 3-1 in the 3rd place contest.

The CECAFA U18 Boys Championship has witnessed intense competition, showcasing the emerging talent in the region.
