Google, the world’s most popular search engine, celebrated its 25th anniversary on Wednesday, September 27. 

The company marked the occasion with a special doodle that transforms ‘Google’ into ‘G25gle’, symbolizing the 25 years. 

Clicking on the logo triggers a confetti animation on the page.

In a blog post, Google reflected on its journey over the past 25 years, stating, “Much has changed since 1998 — including our logo as seen in today’s Doodle — but the mission has remained the same: to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful…Thank you for evolving with us over the past 25 years. We can’t wait to see where the future takes us, together.”

Google was founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, doctoral students from Stanford University’s computer science program. 

They shared a vision to make the World Wide Web more accessible. Google was officially born on September 27, 1998.

Google was founded on September 4, 1998, it shifted its birthday celebrations to September 27 to coincide with the announcement of the record number of pages that the search engine was indexing.

Sundar Pichai is currently serving as Google’s CEO, having succeeded Larry Page on October 24, 2015. 

Page went on to become the CEO of Alphabet Inc., and Pichai assumed this role as well on December 3, 2019.

The tradition of Google Doodles dates back to 1998, a month before Google was officially founded. The first doodle was dedicated to the long-running “Burning Man” event in Black Rock City, Nevada.

In September, Sundar Pichai shared a note reflecting on Google’s first quarter-century and discussing future opportunities with AI in a blog post. 

He expressed gratitude for those who use Google’s products and challenged them to keep innovating. He also acknowledged past and present Googlers who have contributed to building these products and partners who believe in their mission.

Pichai emphasized that while search remains at the core of its mission, Google today is more than just a search box. 

It has 15 products that each serve more than half a billion people and businesses and six that serve more than 2 billion users each.
