The East African Passport, is an initiative by the East Africa Community signed at the EAC Heads of State summit in December 2016.
Among the member states, Kenya was the first country to roll out the new passport in September 2017. Currently, it has extended the deadline to travel on the new second-generation e-passport to March 2021.
The new generation passport was launched on August 31, 2018 replacing the readable East African and ordinary passport in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) specifications.
It also has enhanced security features embedded in an electronic chip to minimize fraud, identity theft, forgery and passport skimming.
