Instagram has announced the rolled out of its TikTok rival Reels which will enable its users to create and discover short videos on the app.

Instagram users will now be able to find a ‘Reels’ section on the Insta app, where they can create 15-second videos using filters, music and other tools.

“Reels gives people new ways to express themselves, discover more of what they love on Instagram, and help anyone with the ambition of becoming a creator take center stage,” it says.

How do Reels work?

  • Open Instagram
  • Tap on the camera at the top left corner or swipe left
  • Now, choose ‘Reels’ among the 3 options at the bottom of the app i.e. Live, Story, Reels
  • You can record video, choose filters, audio, select time duration.
  • Then, start recording.
  • Tap on music to add audio to the clip, tap on emoji to add an emoticon.

Findings from the Kenyan Social Media Landscape: Trends and Emerging Narratives, 2020 report published by USIU-Africa, in partnership with the U.S Embassy Nairobi found out that:
