Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o bagged two awards at the 51st annual NAACP Image Awards held on Saturday, February 22 in Los Angeles, California.

Lupita was the recipient of the Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for Us, a horror movie written and directed by Jordan Peele.

She also won an Outstanding Literary Work for Children for her book Sulwe.

Taking to her Twitter page, Lupita announced her victory. “I could not be happier to have received this honor for my first book!!! Thank you @NAACPImageAwards!! #Sulwe #BrightnessIsJustWhoYouAre,” she wrote.

“Oh my goodness I just got the news about the best actress award from the NAACP Image Awards for the movie US, I just wanna say thank you so much,” she continued. “I’m so sorry that I couldn’t be there myself. I’m away in my homeland doing some work and l I just want to share how honoured I am, so so deeply honoured for this kind of recognition,” the Black Panther actress said on her Insta-stories.

Winners of the night included Lizzo (Entertainer of the Year), Angela Bassett (Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series – “9-1-1”), Jamie Foxx (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture  – “Just Mercy”), Lupita Nyong’o (Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture – “Us”), Marsai Martin (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture – “Little”), Tracee Ellis Ross (Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series – “black-ish”) and “Just Mercy” (Outstanding Motion Picture).
