A single Sacco with a Sh108.8 million judgment against the Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Co-operatives (KUSCCO) has forced the High Court to pause the government’s liquidation of the troubled apex body, days after a Gazette Notice put three officials in charge of winding it up. Justice Rhoda Rutto certified as urgent an application filed by RUPSA Regulated NWDT Sacco Society Limited, formerly PCEA Ruiru Sacco, and directed that it be served on KUSCCO, the appointed liquidators and the Commissioner for Co-operative Development by close of business on September 4. The judge set September 8 for further directions on…

A Kenyan writer just landed on the shortlist for one of Africa’s most watched literary prizes, and she is not shy about naming everyone who helped get her there. The Caine Prize for African Writing named its 2026 shortlist this week, and Gladwell Pamba’s story “The Last Shop” sits at the top of a list that spans five countries: Kenya, Cameroon, Nigeria, Egypt, and Zimbabwe. Judges pulled these five from a record 407 entries submitted from 27 African countries, the largest pool the prize has seen. What the Caine Prize Actually Rewards Founded in 2000 and named after Booker Prize…
The government has rolled out a reference guide for investigating and prosecuting cybercrime, moving to close gaps exposed by a scan that found more than 2,000 vulnerabilities and 4.8 million leaked credentials across Kenyan systems. The Rapid Reference Guide on Investigating and Prosecuting Offences under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act gives police and prosecutors a shared playbook for handling digital crime, from mobile money fraud to attacks on government networks. Its release follows a period in which Kenya’s digital footprint has expanded faster than the institutions meant to police it. A Scan That Exposed the Scale of the Problem…
Epson has expanded its Nairobi office by 50 percent, putting KES 19.4 million (roughly USD 150,000) behind a bet that East Africa will keep buying printers and projectors faster than most other regions the company serves. The move, announced September 1, folds Kenya into Epson’s Middle East, Turkey, Africa and Central & West Asia region, a bloc the company treats as a priority growth zone. It is not Epson’s first stake in the ground here. The Japanese firm opened its Nairobi base in 2020, five years after HP made the same move, part of a pattern where global technology brands…
Kenya’s headline inflation rate climbed to 6.6% in August, up from 6.5% in July, marking the fifth straight month that price growth has sat above the midpoint of the central bank’s target range. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics released the figures on Monday, showing consumer prices rose 0.4% between July and August, compared with a 0.2% rise the month before. The reading still falls within the Central Bank of Kenya’s target band of 2.5% to 7.5%, but it sits well above the 5% midpoint policymakers aim for. That gap has now persisted since spring, and August’s numbers suggest the…
Kenya’s mainstream advertising market spent the first half of 2026 catching its breath. After a strong close to 2025, advertisers pulled back sharply between January and June, dropping total spend to KES 29.53 billion, according to the Reelanalytics Kenya Media Landscape Report H1 2026. This is a 24% fall from the KES 38.7 billion recorded in H2 2025. Yet it still sits 7% above the KES 27.6 billion spent in H1 2025, a detail that separates this slowdown from a genuine collapse. “Total advertising expenditure reached KES 29.53 billion, down 24% from H2 2025, but still 7% above H1 2025,”…
