Kenya’s Safaricom on Thursday said its revenue increased by 12.9 per cent to Ksh 298.08 billion in the year to March from Ksh 264.03 billion a year earlier. Telecom operator Airtel Africa on Wednesday said its revenue increased by 17.8 per cent to USD 1.22 billion in the fourth quarter ended 31 March compared with USD 1.04 billion in the same period a year earlier. Kenya’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 7.5 percent in 2021, rebounding from the 0.3 percent contraction in 2020 according to the Economic Survey for 2022. In contrast, the cost of living surged to 6.1 percent in the year from 4.7 percent in 2018, according to the survey by the Kenya National Bureaus of Statistics (KNBS). Kenya’s banking system needs to collaborate and work together to minimize the risks of innovation while maximizing the benefits, the central bank says. According to the Central Bank of Kenya’s ‘the banking sector innovation survey’ this will enable the financial sector to address the risks and challenges arising from cyber security and the disruptions being thrown up by technology adoption.
