Paul Muthaura takes the helm at the American Chamber of Commerce Kenya (AmCham Kenya) effective June 17, 2026, bringing a career rooted in financial markets, regulatory reform, corporate governance, and climate finance.
He steps into the role at a defining moment. Kenya and the broader East African region are actively deepening trade and investment ties with the United States, and AmCham sits at the centre of that relationship.
Paul most recently led the Africa Carbon Markets Initiative (ACMI) as Chief Executive Officer, where he built carbon market and climate finance frameworks across the continent. Before ACMI, he served as CEO and Principal Officer of ICEA Lion General Insurance Company and, before that, as Chief Executive Officer of the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) Kenya. Across each role, he drove institutional development, market growth, and closer collaboration between public and private sector actors.
Beyond his executive track record, Paul brings substantial board and governance experience. He serves as a Trustee of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC), sits on the boards of ICEA LION Asset Management and British American Tobacco Plc, and serves as an Independent Member of the Financial Sector Deepening Trust Kenya Program Investment Committee.
He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries, with academic qualifications from the University of Warwick, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Maastricht School of Management, KCA University, and the Academy of Executive Coaching.
“As Board President, I am confident that Paul’s understanding of Kenya’s policy and investment landscape, paired with his track record of building institutions, positions AmCham for a stronger next chapter: deeper member value, sharper policy advocacy, and expanded commercial ties between Kenya and the United States,” Angela Ng’ang’a Board President, American Chamber of Commerce Kenya.
