Home appliance and consumer electronics manufacturer VisionPlus, Kenya, is the first brand to assemble LED televisions locally within Tatu City.
Operated by Step Up Technologies, the new facility in Tatu City is designed to produce at least 200,000 units annually, with plans to scale up to 500,000 units to meet growing demand across East Africa and beyond.
“Our regional markets offer expansive opportunities for local businesses. We are impressed by Vision Plus’s drive to establish a local assembly facility and are exploring policy interventions to ease investment and operations for such entrepreneurs,” said Regina Ombam, Principal Secretary, State Department of Trade.
Regional Expansion and Trade Integration
Step Up Technologies is positioning Vision Plus to serve markets within the East African Community (EAC), COMESA, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The plant will also support contract assembly for global brands seeking regional access without local manufacturing capacity.
“This venture is a powerful engine for local value creation and skills development. We’ll produce our own brands and assemble for others, including Sony,” said Umesh Bhojwani, Managing Director, Step Up Technologies.
The facility is expected to train hundreds of Kenyans in modern TV assembly, repair, and recycling—supporting technology transfer and workforce development.
Product Range and Sustainability Focus
The plant will manufacture TVs ranging from 24 to 75 inches, with a strong emphasis on supply chain optimisation and e-waste reduction through R&D and recycling initiatives.
“We are investing in technical training and research to reduce the environmental impact of electronics. Our goal is to build a sustainable, scalable production ecosystem,” Bhojwani added.
According to the 2019 census, only 4.9 million of Kenya’s 12.1 million households owned televisions. A 2024 Statista forecast projects annual TV sales to reach 1 million units by 2028, highlighting significant growth potential.
VisionPlus Invests Ksh 125M in Smart Appliance Manufacturing
Last year, VisionPlus announced a Ksh 125 million investment to establish Kenya’s first local plant for smart TVs and audio systems. The facility will initially feature two product lines and expand into refrigerators, wearables, and accessories, targeting underserved and emerging consumer segments.
“We aim to meet the needs of a Ksh.300 billion market driven by young professionals and families. Demand for home appliances is projected to grow 4% annually, reaching 23 million units by 2029,” said Bhojwani.
