Etihad Airways has resumed its flights between Nairobi, Kenya, and Abu Dhabi, UAE, after a five-year absence.
The inaugural flight landed on December 15, 2024, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, marking a significant milestone for both countries.
A Long-Awaited Return
The suspension of Etihad’s Nairobi route in 2020 was attributed to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global travel. While the airline initially planned to resume services in May 2024, delays ensued due to unforeseen circumstances.
Following an August 2024 announcement, Etihad will operate four weekly nonstop flights between Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and JKIA.
Lena Havia, Etihad’s Vice President of Network and Scheduling, expressed gratitude for the support of both Kenyan and UAE authorities in reinstating this vital connection.

Boosting Tourism and Trade
The resumption of flights is expected to boost tourism and trade between the UAE and Kenya significantly.
Kenya, renowned for its iconic safari destinations like the Masai Mara National Reserve, is a popular tourist destination.
Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, emphasized that this route strengthens bilateral ties and solidifies Abu Dhabi’s position as a global aviation hub.
“The introduction of our Nairobi service enhances our growing network while responding to strong travel demand between the UAE and Kenya,” said Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways.
“As both Abu Dhabi and Kenya experience remarkable tourism growth and set ambitious targets for the future, this route creates valuable opportunities for both destinations.”
Expansion Plans
Etihad Airways has ambitious plans to expand its African network, aiming to double its routes by 2025. This includes upcoming launches to Tunis and Algiers.
