The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has cleared Advocate Cecil Guyana Miller of any wrongdoing following allegations by Ambassador Peter Munyiri, Kenya’s High Commissioner to India.
The claims, which centred around an alleged refund of legal fees, have now been dismissed as outside LSK’s jurisdiction and are already subject to court proceedings.
According to Miller, Ambassador Munyiri has been leveraging bloggers and social media influencers to circulate the narrative that the prominent lawyer owes him money. However, email records and official correspondence paint a very different picture.
In an email dated March 31, 2016, Miller wrote to Munyiri stating:
“…I refer to our telephone conversation. I have not received the email. Kindly confirm that Miller and Company Advocates, can apply the entire set of funds forwarded to us, as legal fees to enable us proceed to finalise your matters.”
The following day, Munyiri forwarded an earlier email dated March 24, 2016, confirming:
“I refer to above and confirm funds remitted by our companies should be applied to pay legal fees for services rendered on our various issues.”
Despite this clear agreement, Munyiri later filed a complaint with the LSK, alleging that Miller owed him a refund. But in a letter dated April 1, 2025, the Law Society responded decisively:
“The Law Society of Kenya does not have jurisdiction to determine the complaint as the issues can only be determined before a competent court of law.”
The LSK cited the ongoing High Court case HCCC E053 of 2023, in which Miller has sued Munyiri, as the appropriate forum for resolving the matter.
Email Trail Confirms No Debt
The documented email exchange between the two parties confirms that the funds remitted were explicitly authorised for legal services. There is no indication of any outstanding refund or misappropriation.
This development not only clears Miller’s name but also highlights the importance of formal documentation in professional disputes. As it stands, the matter remains before the courts, where it will be adjudicated based on facts.
