MultiChoice Kenya is dialing up its pricing strategy once again. Starting August 1, 2025, subscribers will see price increases across most DStv and GOtv packages, while Showmax streaming plans are getting a welcome price cut—a move that signals the company’s shifting focus toward digital-first audiences.
What’s Going Up?
- DStv Premium: From KES 11,000 to KES 11,700
- Compact Plus: Up KES 500 to KES 7,300
- Compact: Now KES 4,200, up from KES 3,900
- GOtv Supa Plus: Rises to KES 3,199
- New XtraView fee: KES 1,700 for multi-decoder access
Only GOtv Value saw a price drop of KES 70 to KES 599, a rare reprieve for budget-conscious viewers.
What’s Going Down?
In a bid to stay competitive in the streaming wars, Showmax prices are being trimmed:
- General Entertainment: From KES 650 to KES 550
- GE Mobile: Down to KES 200
- Premier League (Mobile): Now KES 450
- GE + PL Bundle: Slashed from KES 1,000 to KES 800
This move targets mobile-first, younger audiences—a demographic increasingly turning to streaming over traditional TV.

Promotions & Pressure
To cushion the blow, MultiChoice ran the “We’ve Got You” promotion through July 2025, offering free package upgrades to DStv and GOtv customers who paid in full. But behind the generosity lies a deeper concern: shrinking subscriber numbers.
- 📉 15% drop in Kenya’s DStv and GOtv user base
- 📉 1.2 million subscribers lost across Africa
- 📉 9% revenue decline for the MultiChoice Group
Despite the downturn, the company posted a net profit of over $100 million for the year ending March 2025, thanks to aggressive cost-cutting, the sale of its insurance unit, and a strategic acquisition by Canal+
Streaming Is the Future
While traditional pay-TV is under pressure, MultiChoice’s digital platforms are booming:
- Showmax: +44% in active paying users
- DStv Stream: +38% in subscribers, +48% in revenue
- DStv Internet: +45% in users, +85% in revenue
MultiChoice’s latest pricing play is a balancing act—raising prices where it still holds market power, while lowering them where competition is fiercest. Whether this strategy will win back price-sensitive viewers remains to be seen. But for now, Showmax subscribers have something to smile about, and DStv loyalists will need to dig a little deeper into their pockets.
