A Kenyan High Court has issued conservatory orders halting Bolt’s decision to remove Toyota Sienta vehicles from its XL category, pending the determination of a petition filed by Daniel Onwonga Manga.
Justice E.C. Mwita, delivering the orders, stated he was “satisfied that the petition raises important constitutional and legal questions that deserve urgent and serious consideration.”
The judge ruled, “That in the meantime, a conservatory order is hereby issued restraining the Respondents from implementing the decision to remove Toyota Sienta vehicles from the Bolt XL category.”
He further directed, “That the respondents (Bolt) are further hereby directed to return all Toyota Sienta vehicles which has been removed from Bolt XL category option to the category until 17.06.2025.”
Bolt offers multiple ride categories, including Bolt, Bolt Premium, Bolt XL, Bolt Van, Go Hatch, and Go Sedans.
The Toyota Sienta is a 5-door minivan that can seat up to seven people. It’s considered a good choice for group trips. Bolt’s Uber Van category is for larger vehicles, such as vans, that can accommodate more passengers.
In response, Dimmy Kanyankole, General Manager, Kenya and Tanzania, told khusoko.com:
“We acknowledge the concerns raised regarding the re-categorization of some vehicles from the XL category to a smaller vehicle category. As the matter is currently under judicial consideration, we are limited in our ability to discuss specific details.
However, we want to assure our driver-partners and the public that we are committed to engaging with all stakeholders to address and resolve these concerns promptly and fairly.”
To become a Bolt driver in Kenya, individuals must present various documents, including a clear vehicle picture, passport-size photo, National ID or passport, an Android or iPhone smartphone with GPS, a Police police clearance certificate, a PSV insurance sticker, an NTSA report/sticker, the driver’s normal and PSV driving licenses, and the vehicle’s logbook. Bolt emphasizes adherence to its driver requirements to maintain its reputation and ensure reliable urban travel.
