We sat down with Sunmisola Agbebi to learn more about her and her music.
Q: What is one surprising thing your fans might not know about you?
Sunmisola: I think the most surprising thing about me is that I play the drums. Many people wouldn’t expect it, but it’s something I genuinely enjoy.
Q: When did you realize music was your destiny, and what drives your passion?
Sunmisola: I realized at a very young age that I loved music and that I was called to use it to glorify God. My primary motivation is to give God glory, as the Bible says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” When Christ remains central, inspiration, resources, and opportunities all fall into place.
Q: Which African artists influenced your musical journey?
Sunmisola: I grew up listening to artists like Cece Winans, Mama Bola Are, Shola Allyson, and Kim Burrell.
Q: How would you describe your unique sound and style to someone unfamiliar with your music?
Sunmisola: My sound is characterized by a blend of traditional African sounds and contemporary influences, creating a unique style that heralds the King (Jesus).
Q: What advice would you give aspiring musicians who may be hesitant to pursue their dreams?
Sunmisola: My advice is simple: keep your focus on Jesus. When Christ remains central to your journey, everything else aligns. He will guide you through every step of the way.
Q: How do you navigate the music industry as a female artist, and how does your perspective shape your artistry?
Sunmisola: While I recognize the challenges faced by women in the music industry, I approach my career with a focus on my faith and a commitment to honouring God. I believe in building strong relationships with fellow artists, both male and female while setting healthy boundaries and creating supportive structures within my ministry. I also prioritize mentoring and empowering other female worship leaders in their journeys.
