Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday that the company plans to invest between $60 billion and $65 billion in capital expenditures in 2025 to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Zuckerberg described 2025 as “a defining year for AI” and revealed that Meta is constructing a massive data centre, comparable in size to a significant portion of Manhattan, to support its AI initiatives.
This investment will include approximately 1 gigawatt of computing capacity and will bring Meta’s total number of graphics processing units (GPUs) to over 1.3 million by the end of 2025.
“This is a massive effort, and over the coming years it will drive our core products and business, unlock historic innovation, and extend American technology leadership,” Zuckerberg stated in a Facebook post.
While Meta has been investing heavily in AI research and development, Zuckerberg acknowledged in April that it will be a “multiyear investment cycle” before these investments translate into profitable services.
He expressed confidence in the company’s track record of successful long-term investments.
Zuckerberg also outlined Meta’s vision for its Meta AI digital assistant to become the “leading assistant serving more than 1 billion people.”
Additionally, Meta is developing an AI engineer to contribute to its research and development efforts.
“We have the capital to continue investing in the years ahead,” Zuckerberg affirmed.
