Kenyan media organisations are up in arms against a government directive forcing all state advertising on the state-controlled Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).
The Kenya Media Sector Working Group (KMSWG) condemns the move as a blatant violation of the Constitution and a threat to media freedom.
“These directives are not merely misguided– they are a blatant assault on the foundations of a free and democratic society. They violate the principles of media freedom enshrined in Kenya’s Constitution, undermine free market principles, and create a hostile environment for media investment. As the united voice of Kenya’s independent media, we condemn these actions in the strongest terms possible and call for immediate action to protect media freedom and democratic principles,” said the KMSWG in a joint statement.
The KMSWG is a coalition of media actors bringing together journalists and other civil society organisations.
The coalition terms the current directive as part of a broader government campaign against independent media, including harassment and attempts to limit coverage.
The KMSWG warns that this could stifle economic growth and innovation. They call for international pressure to ensure Kenya respects democratic principles.
“The assault on media freedom in Kenya must be met with unwavering resistance and collective action. We cannot afford to remain silent in the face of government overreach and attempts to undermine our democratic institutions. Now more than ever, we must stand together to defend media freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.”
