Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Monday launched fresh investigations into the 2007/2008 post-election violence with 118 cases being registered.

Out of the cases reported, 72 involve murder while 42 are on land displacement.

“I do not want to regionalize cases by stating the regions from where those who have registered the cases come from…As DCI, we are welcoming all Kenyans afflicted by this problem,” said DCI boss George Kinoti when he addressed the 2007/2008 Post-election violence victims at DCI headquarters.

“Criminal cases are never closed. Not all suspects were arrested and charged during that time. Our courts are very competent and all the cases will be tried locally,” he said.

The 2007/8 post-election violence left 1,200 dead and at least 600,000 displaced.

Currently, two public interest cases have been filed at the Constitutional Court – the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Case, filed in 2013, and the Internally Displaced Persons Case, filed in 2011.

The cases seek to establish that the Government of Kenya violated the formed and current Constitution of Kenya as well as international treaties to which Kenya is bound.
