Khabib Nurmagomedov has been announced as UFC’s pound-for-pound king after usurping Jon Jones at the top of the franchise’s rankings.

Khabib Nurmagomedov was given his final UFC wish, officially becoming the sport’s pound-for-pound king after announcing his retirement following his victory over Justin Gaethje.

Khabib delivered an incredible performance to beat Gaethje thanks to a second-round submission at UFC 254, ensuring he finished his career with an unblemished record of 29 wins and zero defeats.

And days after retaining his lightweight crown, it was confirmed that Khabib had usurped Jon Jones to officially cement his place as the greatest-pound-for-pound fighter in UFC.

The new rankings will have come back to haunt Jones, who earlier on Tuesday hit out at those declaring Khabib as the greatest of all time ahead of himself.

‘Bones’ was clearly annoyed at the declarations of Khabib retiring as MMA’s greatest ever in the immediate aftermath of the UFC 254 win over American Gaethje.

He tweeted a number of times, saying it would be ‘insulting’ he ranked below Khabib in the pound-for-pound list and even made another dig at those putting the now-retired Dagestani ahead of him.

Khabib shocked the MMA world by retiring at the age of 32 after the Gaethje fight, having promised his mother it would be his last match-up without his late father and trainer Abdulmanap by his side.

He won the fight despite the broken foot he was nursing just 16 days prior to the contest and walks away with the biggest purse of his career (£4.6million).
