The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will start conducting alcoblow tests in all major towns in Kenya from Friday after 60 people were killed due to drunk driving between October 2-4.
The Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) in a statement expressed concern over rising cases of road traffic accidents across the country.
“Reports indicate that 2,689 persons have lost their lives between January 1 and September 30, 2020, compared to 2,655 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.3 percent,” the statement reads.
“To this end, the National Police Service will undertake nationwide enforcement operations to address factors such as speeding, lane indiscipline, assessment of general compliance with public service vehicle (PSV) licensing requirement, a crackdown on unroadworthy vehicles among other traffic offences,” he stated.
Drivers will be monitored to check for speeding, lane discipline, compliance with Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licensing requirements and roadworthiness of vehicles.
“We assure the public that measures to prevent the spread coronavirus shall be in place when undertaking these activities,” the statement adds.
According to NTSA report, 2,689 persons lost their lives between January 1 and September 30, 2020, an increase of 1.3 percent as compared to the same period last year where 2,655 died.
The road safety authority also stated that motorcyclists and pillion passengers’ deaths increased by 44.94% and 19.44% respectively during the same period.
